Viral Contamination in Animal cell cultures
In cell lines, the natural
products like serum in medium, and enzymes like trypsin, which is used for sub-culturing
cell lines, are potential source of viral contamination. After continuous
researches and studies it is possible that the bigger viruses can be removed from
cultures during processing, but currently there is no proper and standard way
to eliminate viral contamination completely. One way to avoid viral
contamination is to make sure that the products sources like the animals are
free from known viral diseases and infections.
Detection of viral contamination
Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay
(ELISA) is currently the most reliable method for detection of virus infection.
Alternate way is by using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) with correct viral
primers.
Eradication of Viral Contamination
No such methods are currently
available on which we can rely for elimination or removal of viruses from a
culture. The only available options are tolerance or disposal.
